Dark skin spots can be caused by a variety of reasons. No matter what the cause, they can become quite an eyesore for the person that has to deal with it. There are many different causes for these dark spots such as sun exposure, and I will be discussing some of the causes here to hopefully help you determine how you may have gotten some of them yourself.

Some times called age spots, these dark skin spotscan be attributed to exposure to the sun. Some people may mistake them for freckles, but you can usually distinguish between the two as the spots will be a lot bigger and will be shaped irregularly. These spots appear as a result of sun damaging the pigment of your skin. The skin spots can usually be treated with a skin lightener.

Another cause of dark skin spots could be a birthmark. These usually come in different shapes and sizes. Its origins are unknown, but many believe that it is caused by deformities in blood vessels during pregnancy. These may go away in time or will stay with you the rest of your life. If you have some in areas of your body that you may be unhappy with, you can also treat them with a skin lightener or whitener.

Moles can also be another cause of dark skin spots. Moles can be harmless, but can sometimes be a warning sign of skin cancer. As a popular saying goes “know your moles.” Paying attention to the size and location of moles or new moles can be an indication of other health problems. Moles are created when melanin in your skin coagulates. Moles can either be flat or raised on your skin. The treatment or removal of moles can be a little more complicated than just using a topical cream or lightener. Removal of moles may involve a visit to your dermatologist.

Melasma is also another cause for dark skin spots. These are more commonly found in women. They can be seen during the second half of pregnancy or from the result of taking the birth control pill. Hormones from the pill may cause an elevation in the production of melanin in the skin and cause it to spread unevenly within and through out the body. Exposure to the sun can make the staining effects of these spots even worse. These can also be treated with a lightener or whitener.

As you can see there are many causes of dark skin spots, but there are ways for you to take care of them. There are ways to help you remove them. These can range from costly laser removal at a dermatologist clinic or using over the counter creams or lighteners. You can research the different options that are available to you, but remember to take into account cost and efficiency. Paying attention to the different spots in and on your skin can prove to be helpful. Often the appearance of new or growth of an existing spot could be an indication of other health problems that need to be attended to.
